And just when hearts couldn’t take any more, Lamine Yamal set up Robert Lewandowski for a tap-in, levelling the score with the last kick of the half. Breathe, everyone.
The second half began with a bang as well. Just four minutes in, Raphinha won a penalty, and Lewandowski coolly slotted it home, putting Barcelona in the lead. Valencia, not ones to back down easily, responded with high pressing and risky plays, but the Blaugrana defence held firm. Pedri’s debut post-injury was a sight for sore eyes, as he orchestrated play and made key passes that could have led to more goals if not for Valencia’s desperate defending.
As the clock ticked down, Barcelona’s strategy to slow the game and retain possession proved effective. Pedri, who seemed to be everywhere, played a crucial role in maintaining control. Despite missing a couple of golden opportunities to seal the game, Barcelona managed to hold on to their slim advantage, securing three valuable points against a tricky opponent. Robert Lewandowski and Pedri will get the plaudits but our MVP for the match was Marc Cassado.
This match was a testament to Barcelona’s resilience and tactical acumen under Flick’s leadership. It’s a promising start to what could be a thrilling season. A win at the Mestalla is never easy, but Barcelona made it look almost poetic. Onwards and upwards, Barça!
